Hail causes the granules to be removed from the asphalt mat. When this takes place the raw asphalt is exposed to the weather and with time will open up. When this happens leaks will occur.
Many times people think that the hail storm didn't last long enough or the size of the hail wasn't big enough to cause any damage. The only way to know for sure is to have a roofing specialist inspect your roof. Carlon contracting is qualified to do roof inspections so if you're in doubt about the condition of your roof just give us a call.
When hail hits an area customers need to be careful when they select a contractor. Out of town installers will come to the area and will often do substandard work. The only person that will lose is the customer when they have to pay a premium for repairs later on. Our suggestion is to patient and make sure you really understand the estimate.

Most roofing jobs are not for the do-it-yourselfer. Unless you have lots of experience in replacing roof coverings, hire a professional roofing contractor to handle this job.

Before you reroof, check with your local building officials to be sure what you're doing complies with local building codes.

If you are replacing your old, worn out roof covering with new asphalt shingles, make sure they have a Class 4 rating under Underwriters Laboratories' (UL) 2218 standard. A Class 4 rating tells you a sample of the product did not crack when hit twice in the same area by a two-inch steel ball.

The UL 2218 standard is a useful method for testing impact resistance, but it isn't perfect and works better for some roof coverings than for others. The UL standard measures whether a product cracks under impact. Some roof coverings, particularly some made of metal, may resist cracking, but can be dented and dimple. So, while they test well, they may perform poorly in practice. Keep this in mind when using the UL standard to gauge the quality of a roof covering

Here are some thing to watch for:

Make sure they are replacing all of the Flashing and not just reusing the old Flashing. This is the number one way that the hail stormers estimate will be cheaper than a qualified contractors estimate.  New Flashing will run a job up 30%.
If the contractor says they will match the insurance estimate without even looking at your house, hang up the phone. Insurance companies replace only what was damaged by Hail, not the items such as Chimney Flashings, Wall Flashings and Skylight Flashings that are important for a roof to last a minimum of 20 years.
Make sure the Estimator/Contractor has proof of insurance, and can provide you with a current certificate.
For storm and/or "insurance"  local contractors are the best bet... they can be easily reached if repairs or service is required
